Virtual Doula Service Challenges and Strategies
Overview
Doulas are an essential part of the birthing family’s perinatal caregiving team. Doula care is typically associated with hi-touch in-home or in-hospital non-medical services including emotional, physical and advocacy support.
This session will discuss the unique challenges of delivering doula services via virtual platforms especially during national emergencies such as Covid-19. Strategies and recommendations to improve the quality of virtual or hybrid doula care for both the families and the doulas will be shared.
Training Objectives:
- Discuss 2 benefits and 2 barriers to giving doula care via virtual or hybrid methods
- Discuss the importance of professional development, mentoring and peer support to deliver best outcomes within telehealth doula practices.
- Identify the value of doulas using telehealth platforms to address the need for a culturally congruent and sensitive perinatal support person as an essential member of the maternal health team.
- Identify at least 2 unique challenges of Community Doulas serving maternal communities with high disparities and explain how virtual services can support the need for evidence based education, emotional support and advocacy.
